From Luxor to the desert and the Kharga oasis 3 days / 2 nights

Early morning departure from your hotel in Luxor toward El Kharga Oasis, located approximately 250 km west of the Nile Valley.

Leaving behind the fertile landscapes of the Nile Valley and its picturesque villages, we gradually enter the vast expanse of the Western Desert. This journey takes you into a timeless world of breathtaking scenery: golden sand dunes, striking rock formations, and endless silence stretching across the horizon.

Before reaching the oasis, we stop to explore three remarkable archaeological sites:

Qasr El-Zayan

Built during the Ptolemaic period and later expanded under Roman rule, this temple was dedicated to Amun-Ra of Hibis (the ancient Pharaonic name of Kharga). It features a white limestone sanctuary surrounded by mud-brick chambers.

Qasr Ghweita

Known as the “Fortress of the Deep Springs,” this impressive temple stands atop a hill overlooking the oasis. Dating back to the 6th century BC, it was dedicated to the divine triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu and was built on the remains of an earlier Pharaonic settlement.

Qasr El-Nadoura

An ancient watchtower and fortress strategically positioned on a rocky outcrop. It once protected the oasis from raids and served as a customs post for caravans traveling between Darfur and Assiut. From the summit, enjoy spectacular panoramic views of palm groves, cultivated fields, traditional pigeon towers, and the surrounding desert.

Lunch Break

After lunch, we continue to Kharga Oasis and check in at your hotel.

In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely walk through the oasis, discovering traditional mud-brick houses, lush palm groves, and historic pigeon towers. Here, the desert appears to slowly reclaim the oasis as rolling dunes, some reaching up to six meters in height, advance toward the cultivated lands.

We then continue to Ganah, a stunning natural oasis surrounded by beautiful desert landscapes. Relax in a natural hot spring before witnessing a magnificent sunset over the dunes, as the desert glows in shades of gold and orange.

After breakfast at the hotel, set off for an unforgettable 4x4 desert safari through the spectacular landscapes of the Western Desert.

Leaving the lush greenery of the oasis behind, the desert gradually takes over. At first, limestone formations rise from the sands as remnants of an ancient geological past, but they soon give way to an endless sea of rolling dunes stretching across the Kharga Depression as far as the eye can see.

Throughout this adventure, you will discover the silent remains of ancient Roman settlements that once flourished along the historic caravan routes:

Deir El-Munira

Located 23 km north of Kharga, Deir El-Munira, known as the “Monastery of Light,” features the ruins of a Roman fortress that was later transformed into a Christian monastery. The site also contains a mud-brick temple that still stands today, reflecting the rich blend of civilizations that once occupied the area.

Qasr El-Dabaschiya

Situated 28 km from the oasis, this fascinating site preserves the remains of a temple, a pigeon tower, and ancient tombs. Inhabited from Roman times until the mid-20th century, it tells the story of desert communities sustained by wells and caravan trade.

Umm El-Dabadib

Located 40 km northwest of Kharga, Umm El-Dabadib is a hidden archaeological treasure nestled beneath the cliffs marking the edge of the Kharga Depression. This remarkable Roman settlement includes an impressive fortress, an Egyptian temple, a Christian church, several necropolises, and a sophisticated irrigation system—evidence of a once-thriving and self-sufficient community.

Qasr El-Labakha

One of the most impressive archaeological sites in the region, Qasr El-Labakha stands along an ancient route connecting Kharga Oasis to Assiut. The site features two temples, a cemetery, underground aqueducts, and a sulfur spring renowned for its therapeutic properties. Its well-preserved Roman fortress highlights the strategic importance of this location until the 4th century AD.

As the day comes to an end, settle into a traditional desert camp.

Enjoy a traditional dinner and spend the night under the stars, surrounded by the profound silence of the desert and the gentle whisper of the wind across the dunes.

Temple of Hibis

Located about 1 km north of the oasis, the Temple of Hibis is a remarkable testament to Egypt’s rich history. Built during the 26th Dynasty, the last native Egyptian dynasty before the Persian conquest in 525 BC, the temple reflects the successive influences of the Pharaonic, Persian, Ptolemaic, and Roman periods. Its well-preserved structure and finely carved reliefs make it a valuable witness to the evolution of religious traditions and beliefs over the centuries.

Bagawat Cemetery

Dating back to the 4th century AD, the Bagawat Cemetery is one of the oldest Christian sites in Egypt. It contains 236 mud-brick tomb chapels with distinctive vaulted roofs. At its center stands an ancient church, considered one of the earliest Coptic churches in the country.

Among its most famous monuments is the Tomb of the Exodus, decorated with frescoes depicting the Israelites’ departure from Egypt. The Tomb of Peace features representations of Jacob, Saint Paul, Saint Thekla, and the Virgin Mary. Throughout the site, Coptic inscriptions and colorful wall paintings tell stories of faith, hope, and the daily lives of the early Christian communities who sought refuge in the oasis.

Lunch and Return to Luxor

After lunch, begin the drive back to Luxor, carrying with you unforgettable memories of the desert, its ancient civilizations, and its timeless landscapes.
